Kamchatka, Ho!

November 1, 2005

Orange Bear’s strategy is very simple whenever he’s locked in battle with Mr. Crumpet during a game of Risk:

Hold Kamchatka.

If he doesn’t start out with Kamchatka, Orange Bear will sacrifice legions to get it. “The sea-line to Alaska is all-important,” he insists.

The real reason for Orange Bear’s predictable stratagem is his affinity for his Kamchatka brethren. A Canadian naturalist named Charlie Russell (with Maureen Enns) has been studying them for several years, and a BBC documentary about his research will appear sometime next year.
