Of Pilgrims and Pancakes

November 14, 2005

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and, to Mr. Crumpet’s delight, tall hats are very much in vogue.

The Pilgrims didn’t just bring tall hats to the New World. They brought pancakes. In fact, they ate pancakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

But Mr. Crumpet’s favorite pancake dish wouldn’t exist today without the contributions of the American Indians. They introduced blueberries and maple syrup to the European settlers.

My, my, where would pancakes be without syrup?

Maybe they ate them with powdered sugar and a cinnamon sprinkled on top with melted butter. That still sounds pretty good. Like the Belgians do.
