Trojan Pandas

April 10, 2006

Taiwan has rejected the offer of two giant pandas from China as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.

Citing “wild animal conservation laws,” the Taiwanese government denied the import permit of Tuan Tuan (the boy) and Yuan Yuan (the girl). This latest refusal of giant pandas follows several previous offers made by China to Taiwan.

Perhaps Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian senses that the furry couple (tuanyuan is Mandarin for “together”) are nothing more than Chinese chicanery — a Trjoan horse of sorts. Said one Taiwanese lawmaker: “The pandas are a trick, just like the Trojan horse. Pandas are cute, but they are meant to destroy Taiwan’s psychological defenses.”

Meanwhile, two Taiwanese zoos are appealing the decision.

Could World War III be just around the corner?
