Tearful Ending at Old Hilltop

Kentucky Derby champ Barbaro suffered a fractured right hind leg in today’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore. The favored colt stumbled not more than 100 yards out of the gate before jockey Edgar Prado immediately pulled him out of the race. Some fans were shocked into tears after witnessing the end of Barbaro’s career.

Barbaro was taken to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, a world leader in equine care, where he will undergo surgery on Sunday. Even with all the modern sophisticated animal medicine, Barbaro’s injuries are still considered life-threatening.

    This notes one of the reasons many horse afficionados poopoo racing, due to the high risk of injury. Horse lovers often instead turn to showing horses, which is far less taxing to, and so, for some, far more commpassionate toward, these majestic creatures.
