Day Sixteen: Gaspé Peninsula

August 16, 2006

Mama Orange Bear’s family still lives on the Gaspé Peninsula in eastern Québec, north of New Brunswick.

Mama Orange Bear remembers idyllic spring days spent collecting honey or maple sap and cold winters cross-country skiing and ice skating. She enjoyed taking summer trips to the coast to watch the big cruise ships passing to and fro on the St. Lawrence River.

One day, she packed up and left her home for the big city down the river. She said goodbye to her menagerie of friends, including lynx, caribou, moose, gannets, bald eagles, and puffins — she missed them all dearly!

In the big city, Mama Orange Bear met Papa Orange Bear, and the rest is history.

“If I hadn’t left the Gaspé,” says Mama Orange Bear to Orange Bear, “you’d never have been born.”

Orange Bear thinks he likes the big city more.
