A New Sheen for an Old Favorite

November 5, 2006

Mr. Crumpet and the Missus are currently enjoying the BBC’s handsomely mounted production of North and South, based on the classic Victorian novel by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Starring Daniela Denby-Ashe as Margaret Hale and Richard Armitage (no, not that one) as John Thornton, North and South originally aired two years ago as a four-part miniseries and is available in its entirety on DVD. It compares quite favorably to the memorable Pride and Prejudice produced by the BBC over ten years ago.

“Top hats,” crows Mr. Crumpet. “The movie’s filled with top hats and snow. Wondrous.”

“Yes,” agrees Mrs. Crumpet. “Mr. Thornton looks quite nice in a top hat.”

“Er, what?”

When he’s not hiding from the foreboding Mrs. Thornton’s (Sinead Cusack) onscreen appearances, Orange Bear grumbles about the star-crossed love story: “Why don’t they just get out with it and say they like each other? And I wasn’t hiding!”
