Guinness World Records Day

November 9, 2006

Today is the second annual Guinness World Records Day, and thousands around the globe are attempting to set records in all manner of (dubious*) endeavors. In Japan last month, 14,718 people held the largest tea party ever, more than doubling the previous record of a measly 7,250.

Said Craig Glenday, editor of Guinness World Records: “From the 65,000 claims we’ve received in the last 12 months, we’ve approved a whopping 2,244 all-new records — that’s a 173 percent increase on last year.” Just further evidence that 21st-century folk can and do spend their time constructively.**

Surely near the pinnacle of human achievement (up there with the moon landing and the longest fingernails ever) is the World’s Largest Crumpet. Back in 2000, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason cooked a 9-foot-wide crumpet — enough crumpet, he claims, to have fed 5,000 people. In other words, you would have needed three of these monstrosities for the Japanese tea party (see above).

“All that’s needed is the World’s Largest Toaster,” says Mr. Crumpet.

* “Dubious?” huffs Orange Bear. “Keep your editorial comments to yourself.”
** “Hey!”

He didn’t say it fed 5000 people. He said it might have.

assuming it’s a round crumpet and of same thickness. that’s only equivalent of about 1175 regular crumpets. feeds 3-4.
