Leapin’ Lizards!

February 29, 2008

Little Orphan Annie’s birthday is today, Leap Day, and even after all these leap years, she still likes to say, “Leapin’ lizards!” Perhaps in an as-yet-unrevealed episode in her life, Annie witnessed the Flying Dragons of the East Indies.

“Sounds like a touring acrobatic troupe,” says Orange Bear.

Nope, the Flying Dragon, a.k.a. the equally cool-sounding Draco volans, is a small, rainforest-dwelling lizard known to leap between trees as far apart as a hundred feet! They use a combination of air sacs and side flaps to glide through the air like a dirigible balloon.
