The Hat Makes the Man

The Crumpet household caught the BBC’s recently updated version of Sense & Sensibility adapted by award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Bleak House) and starring newcomers Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield as the two Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne.

It’s very good and all that, but what caught Mr. Crumpet’s eye was the costume design. Of course, you say, these period pieces always have great costumes. Well, Mr. Crumpet felt costume designer Michele Clapton really went the extra mile (or at least a foot) in the case of Willoughby’s hat.

“The best hat I’ve seen all year,” he declared.

“You do realize, Mr. Crumpet,” said Mrs. Crumpet, “that Willoughby is quite the rake. So what does that say about you?”
